A New Reformation
Written by Peter Youngren on April 23rd 2007Revolutions or reformations are not needed in every generation; it is only when things have gone so far that the very foundations of people’s belief systems need to be challenged. Martin Luther lived in such a time. The predominant Christian religion of his day was selling salvation and the forgiveness of sin for monetary gain in the market place. Are we due for another reformation, or as I often call it, a gospel revolution?
I just reviewed a current issue of a major Christian magazine and I see legalism (performance based religion) on almost every page. Various writers lament on topics like these:
- Our prayers aren’t good enough; they must be turned up a whole other notch for God to send revival.
- The problem with America is that there are not enough prophetic watchmen on the wall.
- Christians have an inability to handle their finances and this stops the blessing of God.
- Christians are bound by curses… and one pastor is offering weekend courses on how to break these curses.
- Christians must search for any possible door or loophole for the devil to get in or their life will end in total failure.
- We will be rescued for standing up for the government’s policy in Iraq and this will protect America, Canada and the world from Islamic militarism.
So this is what it’s come to? It is all about what is wrong with us, what we must do, and if we don’t do that then the devil is just going to take over everything. How in the world did we get such a “big devil”? Have we stopped reading the New Testament all together? Page after page in this typical Christian publication is full with what we must do and very little about what Jesus has done. One ad in the magazine runs the caption “We teach what we have done”. There was a time in my life when I would have said the same thing, but thank God I have been delivered from teaching what I have done and instead am freed to spend 100% of my time teaching about what Jesus has done. Many writers and speakers use the phrase, “Wake up America!“ Then they usually go on to talk about some evil in society. I like to use the same phrase but in a different way, “Wake up America to see what Jesus has done, the devil has been defeated, the curses have been broken. Believe in what Jesus has done!“ When Jesus died He delivered us from the traditions passed on through our fathers. Receive that. Whatever was passed on to you of negative traits by your parents has been covered by what Jesus already did. Believe it and walk in that reality.
If Christian believers would get back to being gospel carriers, representatives of Jesus Christ, instead of being fear mongers and people who try to revel in the self induced enthusiasm about their own spiritual conquest, we would see far more accomplished. I don’t fear Islam or the devil, I only fear that Satan, who deceived Eve by his cunning craftiness, would deceive our minds away from the simplicity that is in Christ.

Yes!!!! the simplicity of the cross. something that has been lost with all the religiousity that is in christiandom today. We forget that the one person who has done it all… Jesus. Indeed He is our wisdom, our righteousness, our redemption, our sanctification. Yet man is wanting to work it all out. Live for God they say. but in essense asking you to live according to the standards that they think that God has set for us. so what standards? none other than the 10 commandments? thou shalt do this, thou shall not do this. We nullify the cross by going back under the old system and actually fall from grace and make the cross of no effect for us any longer. how long is the truth going to be suppressed? the truth that will truly make us free. And the devil, who is he? We pay more attention to the devil than to the victory that Jesus has already won. I think God is amused but maybe grieved that people see the devil as the enemy when really the enemy are those that do not uphold the cross of Jesus and we forget that very verse that He that is in us is greater than He that is in the world. So why fight, why battle when the victory is won. All we have to do is stand our ground. What is anti-christ? we think its someone out there in the world trying to control (like how hollywood potrays) wouldn’t it amaze us that anti-christ might actually be from within the church? Who are the anti-christ of christ day? It was the religious folk that advocated law, ceremonies and cleansings. So it was in the days of christ so it will be in our days. I say let God shake the whole earth out of the old system of trying to reach Him using their own efforts. Its time to see what Christ Jesus has truly done for us. victory and salvation secured in christ Jesus. Amen!!!

Right on Pastor Peter!
There has never been a better time for a Gospel Revolution. I am writing this sitting in my room in Jogja, Indonesia. I am very sad to say that these same dilutions are also being permeated in the missions field thanks to Christian television. As a result we are having problems tying to reach Muslims for Jesus simply because the Christians here have been indoctrinated to be too afraid of the Muslims and the devil. It does not help the missionaries that are out there trying to win Muslims to Jesus! We are dealing with a global problem!
We need a gospel Revolution

If you want to exite ‘Charasimatics’ talk about the ‘ Big Devil’ and breakthourgh or talk about some compilicated subjuct they will agree with you…

Throught out the ages we have seen people go from one ditch to the other when it comes to doctrine. It is safer to stay in the midle of the road. We are an occupying army Jesus told us to occupy till he comes. An occupying army enforces the victory already whon. And we do that through prayer and proclamation of what Jesus as done.
For the person who said the anti-christ is in the church because of the teachings that seem legalistic I don’t call that the grace of God, our is love because the one commandement Jesus gave us is to love one another and that all the law was fulfilled in it. It’s true that Satan has been defeated and we have the victory through the cross but the new testament does does say we are to resist him by not giving him room in our lives by our words our actions our thoughs.
The spirit of anti-christ is anti anointing. That spirit comes against the anointing because the anointing brakes the yoke and the best way to keep the anointing from flowing is by walking in the carnel nature. But thank you Jesus if I have sinned as 1John says (new testamen) I repent and I am cleansed. Sin is still sin and we have to be carefull not to minimize its effect on our lives. If we allow darkness in our lives how great is that darkness, nobody can see our light.
I believe that we need to be balanced in all the messages that we receive or give out.
The best judge of the message is our life style. If I apply the message to my life does it exemplify more of Christ through me or more of my flesh. That is why the new testament says to judge ourselves.

Learned Pastor Peter,
You alwayas hit the nail in the head through your spoken and written words. You are absolutely right in your present coloumn -‘A NEW REFORMATION’.The great folly of we the awakened sinners lies in looking to ourselves. When the Law condemns us on our day to day follies and we are convinced that we are lost.‘The Luther style Reformation’ does not help.Ceremonials, formalism is not what we need.We forget what Jesus once said’Ye search the Scriptures, for in them ye think ye have etenal lif;but ye will not come to me that ye have eternal life’. Pastor Peter, You always present Jesus through your pithy and heart changing speeches and writings and that is what we the sinners or saved sinners need.Because no reforms no good works no doctrines but a living Saviour is all that we need.Thank God we have that Saviour in Jesus- the author of our eternal salvation-Hebrew 5:9

thank God human consiousness is now rising up to Christ consiousness(new reformation).it’s simply Christ in you. christianity is not an outward thing but inward.all things are ours, we are of Christ, Christ is of God.we breathe, live and have our being in God,. we are created in God’s image(Christ).so christians relax. you’re sitted in high places and thos who sit dont struggle.
losers focus on war, while winners focus on the spoils of war. where are you.

Yes! Gospel has got to be simple. It’s what Jesus did that counts. As it is written in Hebrews 4:10 ‘For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.‘ We also can rest in what He did.

The message of grace and what it accomplishes must be preached.
There is one question that remains a mystery to me…Heb 10:19-39.
Specifically verse 26 suggests that those who sin wilfully even if they know the grace message should expect judgement.
I need clarification on the context of this verse.

The Beloved;Poster
Pastor Peter have allready answerd that question ( Heb 10: 19-39) in context, clear and distinict.
Jeffrey Teo
Dear Beloved,
Heb 10:26 does not refer to believers who have embraced the Gospel but Jews who have heard but rejected Christ to go back to Judaism.
Heb 10:38 Says the righteous shall live by faith not by the Law.Because the Law is not of faith.Gal 3:12-13
Heb 10:39 Refers to genuine believers because it says,‘But we are not of those..‘
1 Pet 1:5 says that we are kept by the power of God.
Salvation is all of God and none of us.If we are saved by our obedience, endurance or good behaviour, then there is cause for boasting.Ep 2:8-9.Rom 11:6 These are results or by product of the grace of God not a part or requirement of our salvation at all.
We start by grace, continue by grace and finish by grace. As Steve Mcvey calls it, a Grace Walk!
Hope these helps.

Yes Pastor,
I am learning first hand from Jesus that its all about His grace and falling in love with Jesus. How can people fall in love with Him unless they know Him…God has taught me through His Spirit that this world is divided into only two groups: those who know Christ and those who don’t know Christ. Those who know Him the way they should ( a revelation by God),have accepted Him as their personal saviour and the others did not. The verse that God gave me to pray for the salvation of a loved one is Ephesians 1:17,18 ‘that the God of our lord Jesus Christ, the father of Glory, may give to you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints’. With this verse I was praying for the salvation of a loved one. one day this person came to me, opened the Bible and showed me a scripture portion and said ‘God is speaking to me and telling me that He is going to give me this - the scripture portion was Ephesians 1:17-22.
Praise God.

Amen! Its refreshing to hear grace. I was talking with a lady I asked her if she knew Jesus. She said she had foot prints over her bed and a Jesus poem on her coffee table. This is sad to think people actually believe having a Jesus fridge magnet will save them. The world needs to know about grace.

Thanks Peter
We need to pray for our ‘legalistic friends’ that the eyes of their hearts be open, so they can see the reality of Christ our glorious Lord. Satan is real, but he has no real power since Jesus defeated him, he’s not just a figment of our imagination.
‘ The god of this world has blinded their eyes. It’s not just our Muslin freinds , but our blinded brothers and sisters in christ, who need the Gospel restored to them. In the first creation Adam was formed from the earth and God breathed his life into him. That life lasted 930 years even after the fall, when man chose to believe the lie, rather than the Truth. I was born again at age seven, but I only knew that Jesus died for my sins. So I grew up trying to do good, but failing all the time, going back to Jesus time after time for forgiveness. I read the bible , prayed and tried to follow it, with no efect, the more I knew the more sinful I felt, kind of a roms.7 experience. You see I thought that being a christian, was having my slate cleared by the Blood of Jesus, and then trying harder to live a holy life, this went on till I was 25 years old. Having started with the Blood of Jesus, I was tring to finish the work myself because I was blinded to the truth. I lived a very sinful life from 16 to 25 desiring to do good but doing evil instead, the more I lived, the more I hated myself and wanted to die. My heart had been broken a hundred times, I lost a brother at age 21 , and wished it had been me, so my family wouldn’t be so broken. I was hooked on booze to ease the pain in my heart and tryed to fill my emptiness with love, but was broken hearted again, my temper was becoming uncontrolable and one night I hurt a friend , who said the wrong thing and realized I could have killed him. I went home and asked the Lord again to forgive me. I said after that ‘ God if you are real take my life, or I will’. That night I knew with out a doubt their was a God in heaven who loves me with a everlasting love, my broken heart was healed, my sinful nature was gone, and God filled me with His inexpressable Love and Joy, that night God showed me that the man that I hated was dead with Jesus at the cross. I am part of the new creation in Christ, the new race, of a holy people, who’s father is God himself. I was preaching Jesus the next day.
Before, I was sin conscience and that caused me to have faith in the sinful nature which ruled me. As long as I believed that I had to fight sin in flesh, I could’nt believe that Jesus had already done it. A stronghold of satan which Jesus broke, Praise his name forever. The Spirit of God is mighty, at the pulling down of strongholds and every thing that sets it’s self up against the truth, he has all power and authority in heaven and on earth, will we graspe it. This was in 1983, and nobody I knew was preaching it. Thank you Peter this mesage is opening blind eyes , and breaking the stronghold teaching in the church. Believe the Truth and the Truth will set you free. love tom

Pastor Peter, You are bang on the bulls eye on target. The message of Grace has changed my life and my ministry to the nations legalism is not just in USA it’s here in Britain. But the reformation of Grace has begun the tide of legalism will be turned and we will see a Grace filled generation or has Pastor Joseph Prince Benjamin Generation. We are that Generation.

Jeffrey
Dear Pastor Peter,
I’m all excited about the new reformation or Gospel revolution.Basically I’m excited about the Jesus as I have never seen Him before, in all His loveliness and beauty!
Jesus as our righteousness was a stumbling stone and a rock of offense to the religious establishment of His day.Rom 9:30-33.
And He still is today.
Many try to establish righteousness by what they do instead of receiving His righteousness by faith.Trying to establish righteouness by tithing, fasting and prayer, giving, church attendance etc.
Tithing is only a guide not a law in the new covenant! Those who enforced tithing don’t enfored that they should live like Levites.
In Hebrews 7 tithing was only included as part of the comparison between Melchizedek and the old covenant priest. Some said that tithing is before the law.But so was circumcision and polygamy.
You find that in Paul’s prayers in his epistles he never prayed and fasted for revival. That’s old covenant concept.2 Chron 7:14
In fact he prayed for the church that they may have a revelation of the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge that they may filled up to all the fulness of God.
Today we have books written, some are good books entitled with the word ‘Driven!‘God does not drive us, He leads us.Christians are under the teachings that God is demanding and it cost to serve God.Our Godfather rather than our Daddy God!
Paul says that the suffering cannot be compared with the glory! Why are we talking so much about the cost and so little about the Glory!Christ in us the Hope of Glory!
Yes!What we need today is not a revival or a breakthrough! What we need today is a reformation and renewal of our thinking of who we are in Christ and Who He is in us!
All for Grace,
Jeff
