It didn’t rain on Obama!
Written by Peter Youngren on August 29th 2008If you checked Focus on the Family’s website a few weeks ago you would have found a video with a call for prayer. This was a prayer request that a torrential rain storm would drown out Democratic presidential nominee, Barack Obama, at his rally at Invesco Field in Denver. Once the media got a hold of this, pressure mounted, and Focus on the Family apologetically withdrew the video. Ok, so we all make mistakes. I suppose even those who believe that such a prayer would be God’s will realize how ridiculous this looked. The person who produced the video stated that he believed God would show His divine disfavor towards Obama, by a torrential downpour beginning the very minute the program started. Of course, this would only happen if born-again believers prayed hard enough.
Now let me get this straight. A large number of born-again people are to let God know that He is supposed to send rain at a specific time in Denver, CO. And not just rain, but a storm of such devastating proportions that all would know, “this was God.”
Was the person behind this prayer call an extremist? Yes, but regrettably he represents an all to common extremism. Sending torrential rains on a political candidate? What about tsunamis, earthquakes, or assassinations? Are these divine activities?
A few months ago a video was on the news where Pastor John Hagee suggested that God was behind Hitler and the holocaust in order to accomplish His prophetic purposes. These are flimsy, twisted, grotesque and embarrassing interpretations of Scripture (more about this another time).
It is time for the evangelical community to draw a line in the sand and totally reject this kind of reasoning. This is an awful and derogatory representation of Christianity and the Gospel. Is this what we are about? Requesting that God cause misfortune to those who we may not agree with?
One pentecostal Christian in Florida told me God was allowing McCain to win the U.S. Election and that the Baptist preacher, Mike Huckabee, would be the Vice President. God would then orchestrate the quick death of McCain in order that the born-again Huckabee might ascend to the presidency. Where does this line of thinking come from? Who comes up with such ideas? What are people hearing from the pulpits, week after week?
Sadly, the evangelical church has lost awareness of what the Gospel is all about. God is not in the business of punishing whatever person or idea he might be displeased with. God sent His judgment for human sin on Jesus Christ, releasing us to preach “Good News” to the world. Unfortunately, bad news religion seems to be everywhere. Now and then you see a ray of light as someone presents what God has really done for world.
By the way, the sun shone brightly on Obama’s rally.
What if it had rained on Obama? Would that have been indication that the prayer call would have been answered by God? Certainly not! With that logic we would have to assume that the churches that were damaged as a result of hurricane Katrina were also punished by God. The fact is that believers as well as nonbelievers died on 9/11, in Hurricane Katrina and in the tsunami that wreaked devastation in South East Asia. We live in an imperfect world. Bad news is everywhere but our job is to preach the Good News. When we drift from the Gospel we look ridiculous. One more thought. I’m not advocating McCain or Obama; I’m bringing correction to a church that forgot the Gospel. Your thoughts? -Peter

Pastor Youngren, you said it all. God does things at his own time.
This is an unfortunate the representation of Christianity today.
Christians forget that the meaning of christianity is the redemption of everyone who believes in God through His son Jesus: jews and gentiles; black and white; tall and short.
Extremism clouds our judgement and destroys us. There is a hurricane heading down the golf stream and it is been reported as being a hurricane(gustav) of the century; stronger than katrina. It has nothing to do with God’s displeasure with the Republican Convention coming up this week.
If God wants to show his displeasure with us the old testament way, maybe the world would be no more!

In God’s economy grace always triumphs over judgment! The great paradox and humor of God’s audacious power: a barren old lady will become the mother of a nation, a shepherd boy will become their king, and a homeless baby will lead all of us home! We are so busy with orchestrating and writing the story of history as though we evented it! God told Job, where were you when I was making the stars and the galaxies? Let’s preach the good news of the finished work of Calvary and the resurrection and allow the Lord to write His History!

It’s a shame that evangelicals spend more time and money talking politics than preaching the gospel. If you listen to christian talk radio in America, especially during election time, 80% of the talk is about politics. I try to draw a parallel between todays preachers, evangelists and people like Paul, Stephen and Jesus and there is nothing in the bible about any of them petitioning Ceasar or Pilate to try and get the Kings or govenors to change the law and give more rights to Christians. My question therefore is should Christian leaders spend all this time talking about how to influence votes and the legislative process?
Some say that we should fight for our right to excercise our faith. To these people I ask: the freedom of religion has also allowed other religions like Islam, Hinduism and others like scientology to grow even bigger. So should we as Christians really prioritize influencing political processes?

GOD IS NOT ANGRY!!!! He poured out His wrath on the cross. Yesterday I heard the media talking about the new storm in the Gulf of Mexico. They said New Orleans is below sea level-like a big bowl waiting to be filled with water by MOTHER NATURE. I rejoiced and again I say I rejoiced. Finally mother nature is taking the rap. How would we feel if our kids were running around accusing of causing pain and destruction. Here is something I wrote concerning this:
A NEW HEART OF LOVE
An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth
Is this the way, does this give life, is this really the truth
Judgement and wrath, condemnation and fear
Can you really say; fall to your knees, Jesus is near
The words of our mouth speak the meditation of our heart
Jesus said we would be known by our love; that is what sets us apart
Put your heart out in your hand and ask the Master what is inside
Let Him pour in the oil and wine that was poured out from our Savior’s pierced side
Let Him be the potter and you be the clay
Be humble and trust Him; let Him have His way
Then things that are pure and honest and of good report will just naturally shine forth from you
Loving-kindness, gentleness, compassion and mercy will be rulers over all that you do
Oh how pleasing this will be to the Master above
To see the ones He has chosen walking in His perfect love
This greatest gift of all will conquer anything
Ask and you shall receive a new heart fit for a King

Wow good comment Farai D. Grace changes people, faith changes things. When we read about the heros in the bible we see that their faith calmed the sea, moved the sea and even stopped time; but it was God’s grace that changed Jacob to Israel, Simon to Peter and Abram to Abraham. The bible says that the King’s heart is in the Lord’s hand and HE will change that heart. Hearts cannot be changed until they hear the good news. The U.S has heard the good news and has been blessed by it. Only God knows where their hearts are really at. Remember when Paul preached to the Galations. He said; Oh you foolish people, you ran well with the truth. It was just a little leaven that leavened the whole lump. At the end of Galations -6:18 Paul says; Brethern, the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your SPIRIT, AMEN. What a good prayer. We pray for grace to work in their hearts and God does the work for us. That is my prayer for the U.S.A. Wow all of that just came to me while I was typing this-God’s grace just freaks me out.

How unfortunate.
This brand of “Christianity” stops dead in their tracks anyone who is seeking the Lord through some of these large ministries, and it fills the ammunition belts of secular critics who admonish Christianity as just another “religion” filled with extremists.
Christianity has been hi-jacked in much the same way as other faiths have by people who are either genuinely disillusioned, or people that have agendas other than true evangelization for Gods glory in heart and mind.
The challenge for believers is to gently, but accurately portray the message of the Gospels to anyone “seeking”…but it must be done with a firm grounding in The Bible…and The Bible alone. The significance and message of Jesus’ redeeming sacrifice is captivating, compelling and reassuring all on its own…especially when conveyed truthfully and without embellishment.
The truth matters.

Do you all remember when the disciples asked Jesus to rain down fire on some they were displeased with? His reply was to the effect that they did not know whom they served———

I couldn’t agree with you more, Pastor Peter! Great article and truthful!
Another similar area which I find particularly troubling, is when the so-called Evangelicals harbor so much hate inside of them, that they make comments on public forums declaring Senator Obama to be the future antichrist.
We need to realize that one day we will all have to give accounting for every idle word that we have spoken.

I agree with Peter 100 per cent and your correction is certainly needed! When true repentance, holiness, separation and purity are not preached from the pulpits, anything goes! Spirit filled, born-again Christians first of all are about their Father’s business and secondly have the mind of Christ…and that mind is continually focused on the salvation of mankind through the blood of Jesus, the needs of mankind, and the infilling of the Holy Spirit so mankind can have a relationship with the Father. Bless you, Peter for having the mind of Christ!

Right on Pastor Peter! Wow! I know you usually say it like it is but you didn’t hold anything back. I appauld your boldness in bringing “correction to a church that forgot the Gospel”, some will say this is arogant but it is not, the lives changed for eternity by God’s amazing grace will not find it arognat but be grateful they wern’t condemed o hell by “christians” who cared more about an election than lost souls. Jesus loves Obama and McCain alike, God is not a Republican or a Democrat, in fact God is not an American (or Canadian, sorry Pastor), he is God and we need to worry less about issues and problems and more about the answer to all our problems, Jesus Christ!

dear Peter….i appreciate your comments regarding extreme statements coming out of the evangelical community, displaying a lack of wisdom, it seems, many times…....however….I would like to make a comment regarding pastor Hagee….in the interest of fairness.. while I don’t know him personally and have not seen the above mentioned video, I have heard him speak often enough to know that he loves the jewish people, and that he is a staunch supporter of Israel….......matter of fact, I have heard him say that if you called yourself a christian and did not love God’s chosen people you were deluding yourself about your christianity….again, I have not seen the video, but surely he is trying to reconcile the fact that God himself calls his chosen people the ‘apple of his eye’, yet for reasons we don’t understand , He seemingly did not intervene during their massdestruction by Hitler…As God is all powerful, yet did not rescue ‘the apple of his eye’, I suspect pastor Hagee reasons that this terrible thing somehow is a part of God’s prophetic plan playing out. He knows as well as we all do that in the end Jesus, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, will return and rescue Israel from her enemies that exist today…...obviously I can’t know exactly what pastor Hagee was trying to communicate,

Dear peter Youngren,
May God bless you because of your truly given word against those blind pastors who are leading other blind fellows. When leaders are most of time interested in political matters rather than earning souls to Christ, it means that they became backsladers without knowing it nor showing it cleary.
God is nor far nor nearly involved in matters in which his plans of saving people are not evocated.
Please i’d like to ask this pastor prophet to give up in God’s responsability and to embrasse politics because it seems so pleasant for him to do politics than preaching the Gospel to many millions of americans citizen who are everyday facing the spiritual death through abortion, drugg adduction, homosexuality “ Sodomia “ and so on…

Thank you Pastor for working to correct these twisted views. I hear a lot of Christians ‘bashing’ what they don’t agree with. I believe it’s best to just present the Truth. Our God is big enough to work things out without having to strike someone with lightning.

So, God has ceased being Judge?
Why did Jesus GET ANGRY with those businessmen in the temple? John 2:14-17
And what’s happened to that Elymas the srocerer? What did Paul say falling upon him? And what made Paul said that, his emotion or “something else”? And what impact did it make to the governor? Acts 13:8-12
Those people trying to pray for rain to fall on Obama might be confusing God’s judgment upon the wicked with their political wish. But, let’s not confuse God’s grace with His judgment either. Can’t God just have them both today? We have testimonies about people mocking the name of Jesus dropped dead suddenly by car accidents or other things! While some radicals - jihad bombers to be - He saved with abundant mercy.
Gospel must be simple, true. But, simple doesn’t mean incomplete.
Please, take care.

Thank you Pstr Peter for standing for the true & pure Gospel of Jesus Christ. God’s Love is unconditional and not selective - that’s why the Bible says it surpasses all knowledge - it reaches to every human being on the face of the earth no matter how sinful we are - that’s GRACE, Jesus’ love for us drove Him to the Cross and the price is paid in full and God is a God of Love, we need to understand that - simple. You always mention in your preachings that it’s not only the unsaved that need salvation but even the Christians.
Many are led astray by these messages that are portrayed as the Gospel of Jesus, yet they are not.
As for McCain & Obama God Loves them both equality, if God does, so should we & pray for the will of God in their lives and in this whole political issue. God makes the choice and not us. We are to pray for our leaders (those in authority) so that it may go well for us as the scriptures say.
We are to truly represent Christ as we are His Children and ambassadors and nothing else. HE IS LOVE.

It did rain on Obama’s parade. The Lord lifted up a standard against his pro-abortion views in the form of Sarah Palin. There she was on stage with family in toe, even the down syndrome baby that would have been a candidate for abortion according to Obama. Not only that a young teen age daughter is pregnant and they are all rallying around her. I heard it right from Obama’s mouth that he would not want his young daughter to have a child that way as he said it would cause hardship for her. So there you have it, the Lord did lift a righteous standard against his unrighteous one and gave all of America a chance to see another aspect of this viewpoint. Let’s see if this will cause him to fall like rain.

The only thing God has ceased is the Law.
Jesus got angry in the temple because these so called “business men” were doing the exact thing these “prayer warriors” were doing to Obama. These business men thought that the offering they had was the only one God would accept and so they sold it for high prices. Jesus got angry because He knew that these prices were ridiculously cheap compared to what he had to do (Die on the Cross), to make it free and easy for us to find favor with GOD! Scripture says God’s rain falls on the Godly and ungodly. I believe God is still Judge, not for the sins I have committed in the past, present or future (that’s forgiven in Christ), but Judge of unbelief in Him who worked so hard so we don’t have to buy his favor!
I hope Obama wins.

Seba Song2,
It is sad that you claim God’s rain on Obama is through Sarah Palin. So what you are saying is that it is okay to let your teenage daughter fornicate and then become pregnant? You are forgeting something very crucial to our calling as Christians: to love our neighbour as ourselves. The Bible also warned us of not; judging. God is the judge and so for you to say Obama’s abortion views were countered by a pro-life veep on the other ticket is highly flawed.
There is a lot hypocrisy going on with us as christians, especially we the conservative minded ones tend to on one hand say; oh the woman should work at home; abstain from pre-marital sex; we are the children of God and so the special breed but yet we discriminate against others who are different from us.
We could bring Sarah Palin’s motherhood in to question especially if she opposes sex education in schools.
Look my point is Sarah Palin definetely wasn’t God’s rain on Obam.
I suppose if you were at the well-side when Jesus asked water from the woman with many husbands, you would have called the wrath of God on him, maybe in the form a die on the cross.
Oh by the way where in the Bible is it written that if your wife waited for you all the years you were away and you came back to find she had an accident and doesn’t walk the way she used to, you should cheat on her and divorce her?
All the candidates have flaws, leave judgement to God and love our neighbour as ourselves!!!

“God was behind Hitler and the holocaust in order to accomplish His prophetic purposes”... sad to say that it is the prevalent way of thinking in modern church.
We have given the impression to the world that God is power hungry mood Megalomaniac, in need of constant worship and only wanting slaves to subjugate them.
Today highly critical people ( especially in education instiuations) don’t have any thing to do with him. They see Him as beggar of worship,Power hungry etc…etc…

Ir’s not true, Joseph!
Think this, without the LAW, there is NO GRACE!
Romans 7:7 What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid.

Just another political wish. Has nothing to do with the law or grace.

I believe one of the politicians agenda is to keep us busy by television propaganda & to distract us from focusing on what matters the most. What really matters in life is Christ & his finished work!
To me it doest really matter who is going be elected as president? I am from East Africa, and I know some East Africans are hoping that Obama would bring some change to the region if/when gets elected as president (because of his Kenyan background). I do not hope neither think so!! ( I am not trying to pessimist here) However, we know from experience that when Kofi Annan was the Secretary General of UN more people died in Africa than in any other time in history, (in Burundi, Rwanda, Somalia, Ethiopia etc…)
So I have no hope in politics neither in politicians. It is much better for us to spend our time talking about the things really matter than Politics. It does not matter to me who wins the presidency? As Apostle Paul tells us that ‘the authorities that exist are appointed by God’ and hence not man.
Romans 13:1, NKJV. Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God.
