Legalism Looks Unbeatable
Written by Peter Youngren on May 10th 2007If the current Christian scene were a football game, I’d say we are in the fourth quarter and if you look at the scoreboard legalism has an insurmountable lead over grace. This has been an ongoing battle for 2000 years; the legalism of the Pharisees vs. the unmerited, undeserved, unearned favor of God presented by Jesus. There is a line between those who uphold the traditions of men based on merits versus Jesus the friend and transformer of sinners. The Council in Jerusalem (Acts 15) dealt with this ongoing conflict where certain “Judaizers” wanted to lay more “burdens” on the new believers. That time the truth prevailed, and it was agreed that we are all children of God through faith in Jesus Christ. In Antioch, the same battle continued as Paul had to publicly rebuke Simon Peter and his spiritual mentor Barnabus because they were slipping into legalism instead of standing by the message of Christ alone and grace alone (Galatians 2).
I recently heard a sermon by the Pope where he was discussing with his audience how one could obtain eternal life. The main points were; to obtain eternal life would be a struggle, but by working hard to exhibit Christian abilities and virtues, and by working hard to lovingly serve humanity it was possible. There was not a word about the finished work of Jesus, and that eternal life depends on what Jesus has done. Don’t misunderstand me, I like Pope Benedict XVI; he has a nice smile, speaks in a soft voice and seems a friendly enough man. This is not about personality, but about the way of salvation. Are we saved by what we do or by what Jesus did? I am not a Catholic basher. In fact, I have many friends who are Catholics. There are many Catholics who are born again believers in Jesus, wonderful people who trust in what Christ did on the cross. Merit based religion is in no way limited to Roman Catholicism, it is in fact the essence of every religion. I am all in favor of exhibiting Christian virtues and ability and lovingly serve humanity. However, I believe those expressions are a result of having received the life of Jesus rather than a means to obtain it.
I recently looked through the pages of a prominent Christian magazine and it seems merit based religion stared me in the face from almost every page. One writer scolded the North American Christians for not praying with the same fervor as Nigerian Christians. Another one claimed that the reason we have not experienced breakthrough was due to a lack of understanding of financial prosperity, while the third one suggested that a key to revival is Christians supporting the State of Israel.
Then, as I was watching Christian television the other day, the viewers were asked to give a certain amount of money in order to position themselves for the sovereignty of God. This “sovereignty of the Lord” anointing was described as greater than the “other anointing,“ in that it was constant. A “remnant” was asked to step into this anointing by giving a certain amount of money. Again, merit based religion. Now, I am all for fervent prayer and financial prosperity, and I support evangelism among Jews and Arabs. I thank God for the excellency and sovereignty of the Lord as revealed in His sovereign word, but none of those things are available to me because of my performance, but because of what Jesus has done. Jesus’ death and resurrection positioned me for the sovereignty of God.
“Sir, we would see Jesus” is still the cry today. Show humanity Jesus and good morals, good virtues and wholesome living will result. However, by showing people their flaws, failures, inabilities, by scolding and condemning them you will only create hypocrisy, pretense and jealousy.
Yes, it looks like the message of grace is slipping behind, but I am not looking for a “Hail Mary” pass to pull us out in the final minute of this “football” game. No, it is going to be an “All Hail King Jesus” message. I have no doubt that we are going to end where we started. It began in Galilee with Jesus showing unmerited favor to everyone who came to him. This message of Jesus will be front and center again before the Lord returns. Give me your thoughts.

Hey Pastor Peter!
It´s really true that only Jesus saves! Only Jesus heals and only Jesus delivers people. There is no other name by which we can be saved! Still there is this weird thing that when peole get saved, they forget Jesus and everything else comes forth.:(
Colossians 2:6 says ‘As you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, SO walk in him’ Doesn’t it mean that same way as we received, shoul we walk in him? Meaning I am nothing, Christ is everything. I’ve nothing, Christ has everything! He is my all in all! Apostolic Church in Acts was succesful becouse ‘And with Great power the apostles gave witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And Great Grace was upon them all!‘ It was not the resurrection of Peter or John or James! It was and it still is the resurrection OF JESUS!! Hallelujah! Let’s shout to the team of Jesus in that game! Jesus Jesus Jesus! He has the victory allready! Let’s keep Jesus in front and center! He is the one! God bless you Peter and all people in CJI! In Jesus name, Amen.

Thanks for the article. I agreed we are SAVED by grace through our faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, who died and shed His precious blood on the cross for all of us. I believe God’s grace is sufficent for us. I also believe we are all saved from hell once we received Jesus Christ as our Lord, God and Saviour. The bible says we are saved for every good works. there is also a misconception about salvation, it is actually 3 parts. first our spirit is saved after we received Jesus Christ. God divides our soul from the spirit. after which our soul shall be saved. that’s why we are learning the things and nature of God, so that we can be more and more Christ like and let the glory of God shines through us as a living testimnoy, through the preaching of the word, through prayer, through fellowship with Christians who excel in doing good works. yes we need to be saved first before we can do that. The life journey as a christian is difficult, if not impossible. that’s why we need to know more about God’s Word, His purity, his instructions, His leading to helps us overcome our sinful/ fleshly nature (2nd part of salvation) every day. Christians are tempted in every way by the world. One of the fruits of the Spirit is temperance; we need to discipling ourself and be wise to get away from those temptations; it’s works and it’s a struggle sometime. we need the grace and God’s nature in us to be able to do that. The bible says the pure in heart sees God. It’s important to understand the whole counsel of God’s Word; every word of God is from Him. When a christian failed,I agreed a lot of time he/she needs mercy, for God’s mercy endures forever. It applies to the world too. condemnation is bad, but chastisement is necessary, if it warrants it. The world or the christian don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care! Yes, let’s be merciful, as gentle as a dove by all means. The bible also tells us to be as wise as a serpent. the final part of course is when our body is tranformed when we go to heaven.

Yes Pastor,
Jesus is the only way,the only truth and the only life.
Salvation is not a work of man for God but a work of God for man.
If we can earn salvation by merit or lose salvation by demerit, guess who is saviour? You are!
No.Salvation is a free gift by grace through faith from start to finish. Not of works, whether from the start or the end,not even maintaining salvation.
We can’t maintain our salvation. It is all by God’s grace.
Jude 24
Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, and to make you stand in the presence of His glory blameless, with great joy.
Who is able to keep you from stumbling?
Who is able to make you stand?
Who is able to bring you into His presence, blameless?
It is JESUS,JESUS,JESUS!!!

Alas many are the enemies of the cross of christ-paul lamented then but it is the same scenario today. In Gal 2:20 paul says I have been crucified with christ, it is no longer I who live…As long as this I is alive we will see not see as a revelation the utter brankuptcy of our efforts to sanctify ourselves. It is only at the cross that we see our nothingness and it can be appropriated only by beleiving not by feelings. We have been crucified and there is no ifs and buts about it. Beleive it and live in the newness of this LIFE who is in you…There is no other way to live a sanctified life for it is GOD who is energising and creating in you , the power and the desire both to will and to work for his good pleasure satisfaction and delight. Halleluyah!! WHat a freeing reality!!!
Years of legalism has only resulted in a bunch of posing christians ( I was in that trap before ) who inwardly groan with condemnation and the pulpit and christian media only add fodder to the lie that you are not holy enough because it is the easiest thing to say . Cause and effect relationship underlines the thinking of the world but seemingly it is no different for us christians. DO good get good, DO bad get bad. AS paul says then our Lord died in vain…Who needs a saviour, the one who cannot make it on his own..If only all of us see it. I am not gloating in this revelation because I am very much aware of his grace which opened my own eyes to see…Praise be to his holy NAME!!
I am the beautiful spotless wrinkleless bride of Jesus. I beleive it and receive it!! AMen

Yes, yes, yes Jesus will be front and center. Love your message Peter and I pray for you and your family more than ever. Paul said I preach Jesus and Him crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness; but PRAISE GOD unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God. Just Jesus is more than enough. My husband and I are ministering in Quebec and the last thing in the world they need is more religion. I hope we can see you in Montreal.
BE TOO BLESSED TO BE STRESSED!

Yes,Praise God
I agree as I have followed some of the
teachings. It confirms what I see too.
We are not called to be followers or immitators of principles & the strong convictions of others. We are called to follow Jesus by this grace in which we stand. How ironic it becomes as it says in Galatians ‘Who bewiched
you, having started right in grace, now you are caught in legalism’
This is easy to detect in certain churches. But hard to detect in charasmatic/word of faith churches.
Instead of following the Jesus of the
man, people follow the man.Forgeting
the grace and liberty of Jesus.
Many follow thease movements as the
end all to Christianity. They become in bondaged to everything ever said or postulated by K.HAGIN for example.
This is the way Ministry of helps is run in Oklahoma so we must follow all
the meathods and personal convictions
and even opinions this man ever gave in a book or sermon.Let me validate the man. He is a legitimate teacher even prophet,But he had not spoken every word from that office. Many people and Pastors rob themselves of the freedom to be themselves and become religious, and stale, stuck in the 80s. They are trying to manufacture faith and works.Reedemtions
Grace and the believers individuality are lost
WORSHIP,PRAISE,FREEDOM and yes even DANCE, are all stunted
even with lively seeming services.
The controle of a man in homage of another mans monument is exualted.
Instead of celebrating the lord through his grace man made perameters
are being set, even non-verbal traditions of men, negating the power of God. If brother Hagin could
speak from his grave he would cry out-
‘Stop it,I saw in part… now I see in full. Please draw from other clean wells also.I did not have the full and thus only pure revelation of docrine,
I spoke as a prophet at times I spoke
as a teacher,other times I spoke my
convictions based on what seemed respectful and spiritualy logical,
don’t bow to me bow to our saviour
Let Him reveal himelf to you not me.
Stop acting elite and condesending.
Stop hindering healthy growth in beleivers by over-emphesising one or
two elements of God such as faith.
Yes god called me to teach faith,
but not to teach EVERYTHING.Wake up
and do not make man your trust or arm
of flesh your strength but JESUS.He gave many ministry gifts not one or half a dozen.‘
A false balance is an abomination to the lord. There is a neglegence in the weightier matters, righteous justice, mercy.Unmerited favour and liberty.
Thank You Pastor Peter, 25 years born again and I have come to understand much. You are confirming what God has
painfully revealed to me.Your ministry
is breathtaking. His grace liberates
does not enslave,He has delivered us
from the darkness and yokes of man too! Its all ABOUT JESUS !

thank you pastor peter for preaching the grace message, it is so wonderful! i have experienced the legalistic side of christianity, and i never felt fulfilled, and always felt i was never good enough for this godly life, but now since hearing about His grace, i feel more alive with christ than i have ever felt before! we just need to love Jesus, love people and point them to jesus and Jesus will take care of the rest, thank you God!

Peter, every time I listen to your sermons I walk away free. I see such love and change in you since the last time I heard you preach in Sault Ste Marie. I have learned trough the years that if I have stop going to church and some how back slid. I will lose my salvation. I was not involved in church for so long because of all the rules and pain. I myself love God so much but I can’t be perfect and be like everyone else. I have to pray all the time and attend church and every bible study just to feel right with God in my christien believers. I feel so drained and tired because it is so much work and burdensome. I can’t help it that I don’t read all the time and so on. I talk to God every day and pray and read the best I can. I just feel like it is so hard to be a christian that I am turned off. I recently started to go back to church but I am tired of having to change the things I like in this world not being able to have a beer or just fell quilty and not right with God just because I am of this world because I like to dance and maybe have a drink, just a few so on to be right with God. I am confused. Peter if I sinned and can’t seem to change like people want me to and Christ comes to get us will I go to hell and loose my salvation? I have christien friends that got saved years ago with me at a tent meeting. But they are living in sin and so have I because of fear of getting hurt in marriage again. Will we loose are salvation if we do not repent if Jesus came today, because of right now I know it is sin. We want to get married but God needs to heal the pain first. So tell me I am so heavy burden and what about my friends and daughter that are in sin?
Waiting, Thanks

Dear Pastor.
You are right. It is grace of God that saves us, keeps us and leads us. But it also reminds us of our responsibility to walk in the grace of God. Grace is not the license to live in sin, Sometimes grace preachers sound like preaching cheap grace with no responsibility. As we are made righteous we have to live in righteousness and live righteously. This will bring glory to the Lord and draw people to the Lord. Then we will be the Light of the world and the Salt of the earth. The Kingdom of God has Kingdom rules. Otherwise it is anarchy.
With love

Yes, Pastor Peter, in these last days, the gospel revolution is bringing back grace in all His fullness, just as in Jesus’ days, when “the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His GLORY, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of GRACE and truth… and of His FULLNESS we have all received, and GRACE for GRACE.“ (John 1:14-16)
“For the law was given through Moses,
but GRACE and TRUTH came through Jesus Christ.“
(John 1:17)
As Pastor Joseph Prince shared, grace is not a doctrine or a teaching. Grace is a Person - Jesus Christ Himself. Grace came as a Person, who is our Saviour.
Although legalism looks unbeatable, we know grace shall rebound and superabounds. In fact, I think grace has already superceded legalism, for where sin increased (being stirred up by legalism), grace abounded much more.
“Moreover the law entered that the offense might abound.
But where sin abounded, GRACE ABOUNDED MUCH MORE.“
(Romans 5:20)
The Amplified translation brings out the original Greek “Grace Superabounds!“ Hallelujah!
Thanks for your encouraging sharing, Pastor Peter. ![]()

I wonder about Christians, espousing God’s grace and expressing a changed life becuase of accepting Jesus, who still expound upon the anti-social sins: adultery, homosexualism, etc, while seriously downplaying the sins of gossip, judgementalism, smugness and use of the Bible to brow-beat minority groups. The second greatest commandment is “Love thy neighbor as thyself…“ Are we loving our neighbor when we gay-bash? When we embrace the idea we should avoid sinners to keep ourselves holy? How then, do we attract sinners to Jesus? We drive others away from Christ when we use the Bible to pound away at others’ sins. Let us look to ourselves - then draw others to Jesus by expressing his forgiveness and love - for all. Let us be honest about the evil that results from the petty sins.
