When Preachers Empower the Devil

Written by Peter Youngren on October 30th 2007

The devil has no power. His only means of influence is to deceive believers, and if we believe the devil’s lies we empower him. Consider the demonic opposition recorded in the books of Acts; believers were made homeless, taken to prison and beaten. Philip went to a city dominated by witchcraft. Paul preached in cities where idolatry and magic held sway over the people. How were these evil forces were dealt with?
We do not find a single account where any of the apostles renounced, rebuked, or cast down idols, evil spirits or powers of Satan. Instead we only find statements that they “spoke boldly in the Lord”, “magnified the name of Jesus” and “preached the Gospel”.
We know from Acts chapter 19 in the case of Diana, the goddess of the Ephesians, that the apostle Paul never addressed Diana, or spoke in a derogatory way about her (Acts 19:37). While today’s preachers are often heard renouncing evil spirits, why were the apostles seemingly ignoring this? The apostles knew that all principalities, demons and demonic forces including Diana, have been utterly defeated by Jesus’ death and resurrection. Consequently there was no need to address them. In fact the apostle Paul put Diana out of business without ever speaking negatively of her.
Interestingly, about six or seven years ago a preacher friend of mine once again attributed power to Diana and rallied about 5000 charismatic Christians from all over the world to go to Ephesus to pray against Diana in an effort to purge the heavens from Diana’s power. This preacher stated that the goddess Diana was the “queen of heaven”, ruling as a “territorial spirit” over the Islamic world and of course the nation of Turkey where Ephesus was located. Suddenly Diana had power again. Thousands of Christians now viewed her as a mighty opposing force. Paul had never viewed her that way. He had simply seen Diana, as she really is, a defeated demonic deception, not even worthy of mention.
Isn’t it ironic that Diana was once again empowered by a charismatic preacher? I mention this because it illustrates how the devil dominates people’s lives. Satan in fact has zero power (Hebrews 2:14), except when we lend him our authority, but believing his lies. Satan is a factor, but not because he has power, but because people believe his deceptions and lies.
We don’t overcome the devil by trying to break him, or cast him down, because Jesus has already done this. Instead we overcome the lies, “the wiles” of the devil by believing the truth of what Jesus has done. Don’t believe Satan’s deceptions. He has no power over you, your mind, your family or your future. All you need to know is that Jesus has conquered the devil.
Let me know your thoughts. Keep blogging.

H. W. Fowler, in Modern English Usage, says of irony:

‘Irony is a form of utterance that postulates a double audience, consisting of one party that hearing shall hear & shall not understand, & another party that, when more is meant than meets the ear, is aware both of that more & of the outsiders’ incomprehension.‘

Amen to that.

Ymanuel Asalile

Dear servants of the most high.
Jesus has conquered the devil completely. He left him armless utterly defeated. In John 1: My Bible says this ‘Word’ created everything ( including the devil himself).you know, because of the proud, the devil had forgotten that the creator of every thing is the one who formed him. But now he recognizes and tremble.
Thank you Precius Jesus

we just need to realise that Jesus has defeated the enemy. When He died on the cross, it was V-day (in miliary terms). We do not have to acknowledge the power of the devil. Jesus is greater. Think of it, all He said was go and the legion of demons left the man into the herd of pigs. If Jesus didn’t need to go through the motions to bring deliverence, why do we as His Sons need to do otherwise. Greater is He that is in Us then He that is in the world. Be blessed.

Paul Lamon

I have gotten in the habit of rebuking the devil, but thanks to your message, Peter, I see that I need to replace that habit with a better one - affirming the finished work of Jesus’ victory.

Yes.When preachers focus on the devil, they empower him and weaken the people.
Our understanding of the finished work of the cross is critical in putting Christianity in the right perspective.
It doesn’t mean that someone well known or a best selling author is biblically right, just because the majority of believers buy their ideas.
It’s time to have our senses train by the Word of righteousness(as a gift)and to rightly divide the Word of Truth by knowing the difference between the old and new covenant.Heb 5,2 Tim 2:15

Pastor Peter keep up the good work! I agree with your final argument that Christ Jesus has already overcome and cast down Satan’s authority, that Satan has no power over us, except to decieve us into believing his lies over the truth of our salvation. I’m sure that is why you have preached the gospel of salvation, teaching and proclaiming our faith the victory that overcomes the world. However the reality on earth is that Satan is still the God of this world. He is still decieving christians, churches as well as the whole world. He is a murder and comes to kill, steal and destroy. Because of his lies and deceptions we walk among the dead. Millions of souls destined to spend eternity in hell unless they hear and accept the gospel of Jesus Christ. Now as to the state of the church. As a christian army world-wide, there are many weak and feeble among us. Some even turning back into perdition. I agree with Andrew Murray’s statements in ‘The Holiest of all’. ‘The knowledge of Christ Jesus that we need for conversion does not suffice for growth, for progress, for sanctification, and for maturity. ‘Only the full and perfect knowledge of who christ is and what he does for us can bring us to the full and perfect christian life. ‘The cure the epistle(Hewbrews) has for all our failures and feebleness -the one preservative from all danger and disease - is the knowledge of the higher truths concerning Jesus, the knowledge of Him in His heavenly priesthood’. Jesus is the head of the church. He is to fill all in all till we come to the full stature of the measure of christ. As we preach this gospel in the unity of the faith we will see His kingdom come and His will be done on earth.Bye for now-Thanks Toni

‘The theif does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy.‘ John 10:10

Take a look at that verse again. Is Jesus really speaking of the devil? Keep in mind Jesus is speaking to the Pharisees… could it be that Jesus is talking about false religions leadership?

Just throwing that out there…

It’s true but when we come from Africa and we faced the evil spirits, it is difficult to ignore them. One day, in Dakar, Senegal,in the year 2000, I was praying in tongues laying in my bed when a presence came behind me in the bed and put his hand on my mouth and squeezed me to stop my prayer. Through the mirror I saw a black hand like a beast with long nails and hairs. I shout ‘Jesus’ many times and finally he vanished. The Devil is real but Jesus is migthy and powerful. Through my own experience, I know that I have to be focussed on Jesus not the devil but I learned to deal with them when they came on my way. Praise the Lord, He defeated Satan on the cross 2000 years ago and we don’t have any more to be afraid of the devil or evil spirits. Glory to God ! Kharis

With the devil coming but only to steal, kill and destroy…we should also look at the story Jesus shared about the sowing of seeds to the lost. Some dropped upon fertile soil, then on rock where it did not grow. Then the birds of the air picked up the seeds that did not take root. When we are not absorbed in the Living Word of God, knowing that we have all the victory over darkness when we are walking in the lighted path of Jesus, the Word can become distorted and twisted…giving the enemy and his angels of darkness the ability to overpower us as weak prey. Are we not also told that many die due to lack of knowledge?, and let us not be ignorant to our victory in Jesus to conquer darkness by His redeeming blood.
The devil cannot stop any of God’s children from completing exactly what is in our Heavenly Father’s Master Plan for our lives during this earthly realm that we journey through. In the [KJV] 1 Thess 2:18 it reads that Paul was hindered (delayed) by the enemy…and this contributed to his late planned arrival. There are many times that I have experienced life mishaps that the devil meant for evil…and God used for His glory to make good from the experience. It’s all about life long learning. When something difficult happens, God did not say He would abandon us…He promised that He would be right there in the midst of the storm, and since God is not an emotion or feeling…we believe He is there because He promised He would be, or we can be foolish and not believe. I’m sure that Paul made good of his delay…and people that may not have expected to hear the gospel got an ear full during his stop over [delay].
We also should never forget our brother Job, and how the devil has no absolute power left to him here on earth, since Jesus won our eternal victory at the cross. Jesus became ‘King of Kings’ and bought earth back by His blood, and the devil is not the ruler or god of this world, as of a little over 2000 years now. Even before our Christ Jesus, satan had to seek permission to torment this Godly man [Job] of the Old Testament. Back then… the enemy and his tormentors were limited to what they could do to God’s Righteous people who worshipped Him in truth and pure hearts, and turned to Him in all their existance. God told satan that he could bring on the worse, and Job would still not denounce his love for Him…the Creator of the Universe. The only thing that the devil was not allowed to do was to end Job’s life…and God gave him a limited time to torment Job. Many testimonies of today, in war torn parts of the world (not that the devil and his tormentors aren’t active in North & South America), and survivors of the Holucost can/have verified physical and spiritual torments that are very similiar to Job’s trials and tribulations. The most incrediable part is that we have the Holy Comforter to help us endure life circumstances, in comparison to Job…who was a Holy and Righteous man of God before salvation in and through His Beloved Son Jesus. We know by baptizm of water and fire (spirit), that even in physical death we are God’s children, and that it has nothing to do with our works, position or practises in Religion. Any manifestation of darkness in our lives, is conquered by the precious name of our Christ Jesus. Kharis’s (previous blog) account of our victory in Jesus when the mention of His precious name is spoken speaks volumes, as countless testimonies of others who have experienced manifestations of darkness in their lives can also verify.
His Perfect Peace be with us all, as we know the return of our Lord Jesus is soon, and so does the enemy and his followers…and that’s why he is so angry and the world looks so bleak at times. It’s all been predicted throughout the Living Word and the Book of Revelations basically put the seal of the enemies fate upon his and his followers heads. Even from the beginning book of His Living Word [Bible], when our Heavenly Father told Adam & Eve that from her seed would come one who would bruise the serpents head, the enemy knew he was in competition for souls…with God. After his failure to tempt Jesus in the wilderness, the devil’s anger raged through the Religious men of the church who wanted Jesus crucified for His teachings. Eternal damnation is for the serpent and his followers, and God’s children eternal life with Jesus. Satan knows his time is short, and he is trying to hit us with his best shots…that will not penetrate the love and blood of Jesus, even in and through our physical death…which is a temperary sleep before the trumpet sounds.
Since fear is not of our Heavenly Father, we walk forward in confidence and strength knowing that Jesus is before us, beside us, behind us, in us, and totally with us on our pilgramage through our earth visit/life, and according to our Lord’s Prayer…‘God’s will be done on earth as it is in heaven’.
Thanks Peter and Roxanne for your continued loyality, faith and teaching of God’s Living Word worldwide, as we march on into eternal life with Jesus.

We are going to be very surprised to see how small the little devil really is. My focus right now is on how big and powerful Jesus was and is and always will be. He is the word and that little old slew foot is terrified of our big big big GOD! Wow I just preached myself happy.
